ProDESKTOP 3: Using the Revolve Command

In this exercise you will learn how to make circular or turned components:

WARNING! The following instructions do not apply to users of Version 8. (V8'ers see bottom of page.)

To make the Doughnut:

  1. Open a new Design.

  2. Use Shift and W to go onto the Workplane.

  3. Click on base in the left hand window then double click on initial. Rename the sketch axis.

  4. Draw a vertical line (hold down shift to make sure it is straight).

  5. Click on the Workplane menu, then New Sketch. Rename the sketch section.

  6. Draw a circle to the right of the vertical line.

  7. Click on Feature then Revolve Profile. Type 360 into the angle box. You should produce a doughnut.

  8. Save your work.

  9. Try repeating the process with an angle smaller than 360 degrees. Try 270, 180 etc.

To Make the Chess Piece:

  1. Repeat instructions 1. to 5. above.

  2. Using the drawing tools draw a section through half of a chess piece. (A pawn is the easiest). Do not forget to complete the section by drawing a line up the middle – on top of the original axis line.

  3. Use the cutting tool to nibble away the parts of the drawing that you do not want.

  4. Click on Line then Toggle Sketch Filled. If the drawing is filled with colour then this section will revolve successfully.

  5. Click on Feature then Revolve Profile. Type 360 into the angle box. You should end up with a chess piece.

  6. Save your work.

  Using Version 8 to Revolve:

Doughnut: Dead easy!  Draw a circle on the workplane. Draw a line. Toggle line construction to turn it into a dotted construction line. Click on Feature then Revolve Profile. Type 360 into the angle box. You should produce a doughnut.

Chess Piece: Almost as easy. Draw the chess piece profile as in the instructions above.  When you are satisfied with the profile (and it has shaded itself in) draw a vertical line through the point about which you want to rotate the object. Toggle line construction to turn it into a dotted construction line. Click on Feature then Revolve Profile. Type 360 into the angle box.  Tour chess piece should appear.

Experimenting with Revolve:

Try out different shapes using this feature. Remember to use Toggle Sketch Filled to check that your design will revolve. Some things to try:

ü      Football, Rugby ball, Discus.

ü      Cotton reel, Pulley wheel, Washer.

ü      Turned table leg, Door knob, Drinks bottle.

ü      Drawing pin, panel pin, carpet tack.

Render your drawings using the Album procedure.
